Understanding Project Groups and Project Types

When to use high-level project groups versus specific project types for reporting.

Overview

XMP offers two ways to classify projects for reporting: project groups and project types. They work together but serve different levels of detail.

Project Groups

Project groups are high-level — useful for bundling projects you want to manage or report on together. Examples:

  • All projects for a particular client
  • All build-stage projects across the business

See How to Create Project Groups.

Project Types

Project types are more specific — use them for finer reporting slices. Examples:

  • Specific types of build, design, or survey work
  • Electrical, rigging, or groundworks department projects

See How to Set Up Project Types.

Best Practice

Be more specific with project types and looser with project groups. Groups roll up many projects; types distinguish what kind of work each project represents.
