How to Configure Work Types

Set up and customise the types of work that can be booked in the XMP schedule, including timesheet requirements.

Overview

Work types define the categories of work your team does — for example, Rigging, Site Survey, or Design. They control how jobs are booked, help the schedule flag potential double-booking, and determine whether engineers need to submit timesheets against that type of work.

How to Access Work Types

Go to Main Menu → Schedule, then click the "Actions" dropdown in the top right corner and select "Configure Work Types".

Adding and Renaming Work Types

From the work types list you can:

  • Click the pencil icon next to any existing work type to rename it
  • Click "Add New" to create a new work type (e.g., you may want distinct types of Survey work, such as "Rigging Survey" or "Site Survey")

Managing Conflicts

The Allow Conflicts setting controls whether the same engineer can be booked on more than one job of that work type on the same day. By default this is set to No.

If your team regularly does multiple short jobs in a day — such as two or three surveys — the recommended approach is to keep Allow Conflicts set to No and instead use time-of-day scheduling:

  1. When booking the first job, set the Working Day Type to "First Half of Day"
  2. When booking the second job for the same engineer on the same day, set it to "Second Half of Day"

This way the system will still warn you if the same engineer is already booked for the same period, preventing accidental double-booking. For very flexible schedules, you can also choose "Selected Times" to specify exact hours.

Enabling Timesheets

Each work type has a Requires Timesheets setting. When ticked, any engineer scheduled against a job of that work type will be required to submit a timesheet via the mobile app. The work types list shows at a glance which types currently require timesheets and which don't.

You don't need to enable this for every work type — only the ones where you need to track hours. For the full setup guide, see How to Enable Timesheets for Work Types.
